Biography: Travis Cleveland was born in rural Texas. His upbringing, education, travel and imagination have shaped who he has become as a person, and as an artist. Below is a glimpse of his ideas and experiences that have created an evolving personality full of energy that seeks out life instead of waiting for it.
Travis began college to study Architecture at the University of Colorado (Boulder) but decided to extend to other areas and mediums in Design. He transferred to Dallas and eventually graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in December 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with an emphasis on Design.
He has also had the opportunity to travel throughout the USA, Canada, Costa Rica, and Western Europe. These travels have influenced him in many ways.
Inspiration is all inclusive and often builds upon itself, linking one experience to another. Travis believes that the majority of his design is not based on a direct response, meaning one event did not directly create one work. Each idea may initially be inspired by a solitary entity but through the subconscious self it is manifested in a variety of ways filled with connections to other sources. His work flows from inside him, spontaneous and guided by intuitive feeling and visual appeal. This fluidity allows for the random accidents that turn into masterpieces. Travis believes that his work may begin with an original intent or idea, but evolves as it’s created and only after its finished can others find meaning and draw their own conclusions about what is being ‘said’. The artist himself looks at his completed work then evaluates it based upon it’s original direction. Travis believes that art is subjective and each person interprets it in different ways and that’s why it’s unique and special. He enjoys hearing what other people see and feel when looking at his designs, and is constantly amazed in the variety of human imagination because what he felt and see’s in his own work is expanded or transformed when another individual seeks to discover the ‘meaning’ behind a design.
One strong idea that Travis indulges is that most art is created without meaning and only once it’s complete do humans seek to give it purpose.
